Royal Crown Renos provides expert plastering services in North York, along with professional mudding and taping services and complete drywall finishing for new installations and existing wall repairs. The difference between a renovation that looks finished and one that looks amateurish almost always comes down to the quality of the taping, mudding, and finishing work. Our tradespeople apply joint compound in the correct number of coats, sand progressively, and deliver walls and ceilings that are truly flat and smooth before paint goes on.
Taping and mudding are one of the most skill-dependent trades in interior finishing. The results are unforgiving under certain lighting conditions, and shortcuts at any stage show up clearly once the paint is on. Our clients choose us because we do not take shortcuts:
Correct coat sequence: We apply the right number of coats with adequate dry time between each, rather than rushing through to avoid waiting.
Feathering and flatness: Each coat is feathered progressively wider so seams and fastener heads disappear into the wall plane rather than creating ridges.
Skim coat capability: Full-wall skim coating for walls that are uneven, previously textured, or require a consistent base for high-sheen paints.
Plaster wall experience: We work with traditional plaster as well as drywall, providing repairs and new plaster coats on older North York homes where needed.
Walls that look flat and seamless after painting start with mudding and taping done correctly. Book a consultation and see the difference quality finishing makes.

Our drywall finishing services in North York cover every stage of the finishing process, from first coat to final sanding:
Taping and first coat: Fibreglass mesh or paper tape embedded in joint compound over all seams, corners, and fastener heads.
Second and finish coats: Progressively wider coats feathered smoothly, with each layer sanded before the next is applied.
Corner bead installation: Metal or plastic corner bead installed at all outside corners and finished flush with the adjacent walls.
Skim coating: Full-wall or full-ceiling application of a thin finish coat to level uneven surfaces and create a smooth, consistent base for painting.
Plaster repair and re-coating: Repairing damaged plaster walls and applying new scratch and brown coats where replastering is required.
Texture application: Applying knockdown, orange peel, and other specified textures over finished surfaces where a smooth wall is not the desired result.
Drywall finishing is a patient process. The quality of the result is determined by how many coats are applied, how well each is sanded, and how carefully the work is inspected before the next coat begins:
Inspection and preparation: We inspect the board installation for gaps, proud fasteners, and damaged corners before taping begins.
Taping and first coat: Tape embedded, fasteners spotted, and all seams and corners covered with the first coat of compound.
Second and finish coats: Compound built up and feathered over two or more additional coats with sanding between each.
Final sanding and inspection: Surfaces sanded to a flat, smooth finish, inspected under raking light, and primed ready for paint.
What is the difference between taping and skim coating?
Taping refers specifically to the process of covering drywall seams, corners, and fastener heads with joint compound to create a flat surface. Skim coating is a separate process where a thin layer of compound is applied over an entire wall or ceiling surface to level it or create a smooth base. They are often done in sequence, with taping first and skim coating applied afterward if the wall needs overall levelling.
How long does mudding and taping take?
A properly finished room requires a minimum of three coats of compound, each of which must dry fully before the next is applied. In typical conditions, this means a minimum of three to four days for a standard room. Rushing the drying process produces cracking and shrinkage that show through paint.
Do I need skim coating or just taping for a renovation?
New drywall installations require taping and at least two finish coats as standard. Skim coating is recommended when the existing or new surface has significant variation, when smooth walls are needed for high-sheen paints, or when previously textured surfaces are being converted to smooth. We assess and advise on which approach is appropriate for your specific situation.
